Iran Faces Growing Unrest as Trump and Tehran Exchange Threats

Iran Faces Growing Unrest as Trump and Tehran Exchange Threats

Post by : Meena Ariff

Tensions between the United States and Iran intensified on Friday as President Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials exchanged sharp warnings while protests continued to spread across parts of the Islamic Republic. The unrest, now entering its sixth day, has already turned deadly, with at least seven people killed amid clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

The protests were initially triggered by Iran’s deepening economic crisis, particularly the rapid collapse of its national currency. The rial has fallen to historic lows, with one US dollar now trading at nearly 1.4 million rials, putting immense pressure on daily life. What began as economic frustration has increasingly evolved into open anger against Iran’s ruling system, with demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans in several cities.

President Trump publicly weighed in on the unrest through social media, warning Iranian authorities against violent repression. He stated that if peaceful protesters were harmed, the United States would step in to support them. In a follow-up message, Trump declared that the US was “locked and loaded,” though he did not specify what actions might follow.

Iranian leaders reacted swiftly and forcefully. Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, accused the United States and Israel of fueling the unrest, a claim often made by Iranian officials during periods of protest. He warned that any US interference would lead to widespread regional instability and damage American interests. Larijani also cautioned that US military forces stationed in the region could face consequences.

Another senior figure, Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, echoed similar warnings, saying that any foreign threat to Iran’s security would be met with a strong response. Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary speaker stated that US military bases in the region would be considered legitimate targets if tensions escalated further.

Despite the strong rhetoric, US officials said there have been no significant changes in American troop levels or military readiness in the Middle East following Trump’s statements.

The protests have appeared in several provinces, including Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan region. Funerals for some of the victims have also turned into protest marches, further fueling unrest. One widely shared video showed mourners confronting security personnel at the burial of a young man killed during demonstrations earlier this week. Authorities initially claimed he was affiliated with a paramilitary group, but later reports questioned that assertion.

Iran’s reformist president has attempted to strike a softer tone, signaling a willingness to engage with protesters. However, he has openly admitted that his government has limited tools to reverse the economic collapse, especially after the recent conflict involving Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In recent days, Iran announced it had halted uranium enrichment at all sites, suggesting it remains open to renewed negotiations with Western powers to ease sanctions. Still, no talks have begun, and both Washington and Israel have warned Iran against restarting its nuclear program.

Analysts caution that open US support for the protests could backfire. While public anger is largely driven by domestic economic and political failures, Iranian authorities may use Trump’s remarks to justify a harsher crackdown, potentially drawing the US deeper into the crisis.

As protests continue and diplomatic tensions rise, the situation remains volatile, with risks not only for Iran but for the wider Middle East region.
