A Turkish court has ordered the arrest and jailing of 20 suspects, including well-known Super Lig football players, as part of a rapidly widening investigation into illegal betting and insider gambling in the country’s professional leagues.
The development comes after prosecutors last week issued detention orders for 46 people, a list that included active players, club presidents, referees, and sports commentators. The investigation has shaken Turkey’s football community and raised new concerns about match integrity and corruption within the sport.
Galatasaray and Fenerbahce Players Among Those Jailed
That Galatasaray defender Metehan Baltaci and Fenerbahce midfielder Mert Hakan Yandas were among those formally arrested and sent to jail pending trial. Former Adana Demirspor president Murat Sancak was also taken into custody.
During his court appearance, Baltaci admitted that he had placed bets on a few matches when he was still a youth player, but said he stopped after joining Galatasaray’s first team. Yandas, meanwhile, denied any involvement in betting, telling the court that he had never participated in gambling on professional matches.

Sancak also rejected the accusations and told the court he did not have any betting accounts and had never placed a wager on football games, according to reports carried by Cumhuriyet newspaper.
Representatives for the two players and the former club president have not yet responded to requests for comment.
A Scandal That Keeps Growing
Turkey has been grappling with a growing football betting scandal that has spread far beyond players. Last month, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees and assistant referees after investigators discovered that match officials in professional leagues were betting on games.
What began as a limited inquiry has now expanded dramatically. Authorities have arrested eight more suspects, including the chairman of a top-division club. The TFF responded by suspending 1,024 players across all leagues, imposing immediate bans until the investigation concludes.
The widening crackdown has raised serious questions about the integrity of Turkish football, with investigators exploring whether illegal betting groups influenced match outcomes or had access to insider information.
A Critical Moment for Turkish Football
The Turkey football betting scandal has now become one of the most significant integrity crises in the history of the country’s professional leagues. With top players, major club officials, referees, and youth players under scrutiny, the investigation continues to expand each week.
As the court prepares for trial proceedings, the scandal is expected to remain in the spotlight, drawing intense public and media attention as Turkey struggles to rebuild trust in its most popular sport.
