Turkmenistan and the United Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening international security cooperation following high-level talks held in New York. During his official visit to the United States, Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov met with Acting United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Alexander Zuev to discuss a broad range of security and diplomatic initiatives.
The meeting highlighted the long-standing strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation across multiple sectors and emphasized the importance of maintaining close coordination in addressing emerging global challenges related to peace, security, and sustainable development.
A major focus of the discussions was the recent adoption of the United Nations General Assembly resolution titled “The Role and Importance of a Policy of Neutrality in Maintaining and Strengthening International Peace, Security and Sustainable Development,” approved on May 20, 2026. Officials described the resolution as a significant recognition of Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality and its contribution to international peacebuilding efforts.
During the talks, Turkmenistan presented several major initiatives aimed at promoting peace and preventive diplomacy. Among them was the proposal to establish an Academic Center for the Study of Peace, Neutrality and Preventive Diplomacy based at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiative is designed to support research, education, and international dialogue on conflict prevention and peaceful cooperation.
The Turkmen delegation also outlined plans to create a Chamber of Mediation for Peace that would serve as a practical mechanism for resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiation. In addition, discussions covered the joint development of international guidelines on the implementation of neutrality principles and the advancement of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s proposal for a Global Security Strategy grounded in international law.
Regional and international security issues formed another key part of the meeting. Turkmenistan reaffirmed its support for the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and highlighted the importance of strengthening collective responses to evolving security threats. Officials stressed that preventive diplomacy remains one of the most effective tools for maintaining stability across the region.
A notable proposal presented during the talks was the establishment of a Programme Office of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in Ashgabat. According to Turkmen representatives, the office would serve as an important analytical and expert platform for regional cooperation on counter-terrorism, security capacity building, and information sharing. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing readiness to deepen cooperation further through joint programs, professional training initiatives, and continued diplomatic engagement.
