UAE and Japan Enhance Cooperation at Third CSPI Meeting in Tokyo

Post by : Maya Rahman

In Tokyo, the United Arab Emirates and Japan conducted the third round of discussions under the Subcommittee on Political Diplomacy and International Cooperation, part of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI). The meeting was co-chaired by Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside Iwamoto Keiichi, Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both delegations reaffirmed the strength of the UAE-Japan relationship, underpinned by shared strategic interests and a history of diplomatic engagement marked by frequent high-level visits. They discussed the pressing need to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to bolster economic ties and drive joint progress.

Topics of collaboration spanned various sectors, including the economy, space exploration, cutting-edge technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital innovation. The two nations also committed to strengthening cooperation within international forums to promote global peace and sustainable development.

Exchanging views on local and international issues, particularly in the Middle East and Asia, the countries emphasized the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to tackle conflicts and regional challenges. A focus on protecting civilians affected by conflicts and ensuring humanitarian aid access was particularly pertinent, with attention given to the crises in Gaza and Sudan.

The parties agreed to maintain frequent consultations to advance their shared objectives and enhance the prosperity of both nations. This partnership highlights the UAE’s proactive stance in contributing to international peace while nurturing robust relations with Japan.

Post-meeting, Reem Ketait engaged with Onishi Yohei, Japan's Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, reaffirming the intent to strengthen ties through greater parliamentary interaction. The UAE Ambassador to Japan, Shihab Al Faheem, along with other UAE representatives, participated actively in these discussions.

The event marked a significant milestone in the UAE-Japan alliance, with both countries expressing intent to pursue fresh collaboration in trade, technology, and political spheres. Aiming for sustainable growth and innovation, their efforts seek to augment regional stability and foster international cooperation.

The dialogue also underscored the importance of advanced technologies such as AI and digital transformation in fostering economic progress. Both parties recognized that sharing expertise and best practices in these fields would be beneficial for their citizens, paving the way for a secure and prosperous future.

The UAE-Japan CSPI subcommittee remains a vital platform for dialogue, enhancing mutual understanding and building strategic partnerships. The Tokyo meeting exemplifies the dedication of both nations to work together in the realms of political, economic, and technological significance while addressing humanitarian and regional security issues.

Through these collaborative efforts, the UAE and Japan reinforce their roles as partners committed to peace, stability, and sustainable development, highlighting the importance of diplomatic cooperation and strategic engagement to tackle regional and global challenges.
