UAE Delegation Kicks Off 3rd Asian Youth Games

The third Asian Youth Games were inaugurated under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre on Wednesday. Representing the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, was in attendance. The event will run until October 31, 2025.

At the Al Sakhir Palace, His Majesty King Hamad warmly welcomed Sheikh Mansoor and other heads of delegations, offering congratulations on the Games' opening. Upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport, he was received by H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

In the opening segment, Sheikh Mansoor was accompanied by UAE officials including Dr. Ahmed Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, and UAE Ambassador to Bahrain, Fahad Mohammed Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, alongside other dignitaries like Ghanem Mubarak Al Hajeri and Major General Dr. Mohammed Al Murr.

The ceremony commenced with the national anthem of Bahrain and highlighted the rich cultural heritage through various performances. During the march of nations, Sheikh Mansoor acknowledged the UAE delegation, which proudly carried the national flag led by Ali Al Kaabi from the triathlon team and Sheikha Al Ketbi of the taekwondo team. Traditions were upheld with the flag-raising ceremony prior to official competitions.

In his address, Sheikh Mansoor urged the UAE athletes to see their representation as an esteemed honor, highlighting the vital support from UAE leadership that empowers youth athletes with resources necessary for achievement. The Games also serve to prepare UAE athletes for the upcoming Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal, next year.

This year marked the first indoor opening ceremony, allowing over 5,000 athletes from 45 nations to compete in 26 sports. Sheikh Mansoor praised the organizing committee in Bahrain for their exceptional hosting and facilities.

The UAE's contingent comprises 152 athletes, with 107 men and 45 women, contesting in 19 disciplines, including handball, 3x3 basketball, equestrian events, athletics, swimming, boxing, Muay Thai, e-sports, weightlifting, triathlon, taekwondo, table tennis, camel racing, badminton, golf, judo, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts.

Competitive action commenced with the UAE national handball team achieving a notable 35-27 victory against Kazakhstan in their second match. Additional athlete arrivals from disciplines such as equestrian, athletics, Muay Thai, and basketball were welcomed by the UAE National Olympic Committee, wishing them success.

The UAE's role in the Asian Youth Games illustrates its dedication to developing young talent and enhancing international sportsmanship. Ongoing support from leadership inspires these athletes to reach their full potential on a continental level.
