The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a substantial $5 million contribution to the Sudan Humanitarian Fund, underscoring its dedication to bolstering emergency humanitarian initiatives in Sudan amid a spiraling crisis.
This pledge was formalized through a partnership agreement between the UAE Aid Agency and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan. The funding is aimed at fortifying rapid response efforts, ensuring that vital assistance reaches the most impacted communities grappling with ongoing disruptions and conflict.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, emphasized that the escalating humanitarian challenges in Sudan necessitate swift and coordinated global action. He highlighted the large-scale movement of civilians into nearby nations including Chad, South Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia as indicators of the regional ramifications of the crisis.
“The deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan requires intensified collective efforts and swift responses to support early recovery, promote stability and ease the severe challenges faced by millions of people,” Al Ameri articulated.
The United Nations has warmly welcomed this contribution, with Sajeda Al Shawa, Head of OCHA’s Office in the UAE, expressing gratitude for the UAE’s ongoing support. She stated that the funding will be pivotal in ensuring the timely distribution of life-saving aid in adherence to humanitarian principles.
“This contribution will help bolster rapid humanitarian response mechanisms and guarantee that aid reaches those most in need, when required,” she affirmed.
In light of the ongoing crisis, the UAE has contributed an impressive total of $784 million in humanitarian assistance to Sudan. Over the last decade, the UAE's total aid to the country has reached $4.24 billion, demonstrating a long-term commitment to supporting the Sudanese populace during crucial times.
The UAE has reiterated its call for a humanitarian ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding civilians and permitting the safe, continuous provision of aid. Officials contend that these measures are essential for alleviating suffering, stabilizing the region, and fostering long-term peace initiatives in Sudan.
