In a tragic incident in North Yorkshire, England, an elderly couple chose to end their lives together after one of them was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer. David Jeffcock, 80, and his wife Susan Jeffcock, 74, climbed 199 steps to the historic Whitby Abbey cliff before holding hands and plunging 180 feet to their deaths.
Authorities were alerted after a member of the public reported seeing the couple on the rocks below. North Yorkshire Coroner Jon confirmed that the provisional cause of death was “multi-trauma.”
According to family reports, David had been battling bone cancer for some time and could no longer cope with the severe pain. The couple left a note for their solicitor at their home, in which David expressed his sorrow for the shock their deaths might cause and wrote, “Susan wants to come with me.” Susan, who had been caring for her husband for many years, was reportedly devoted to David and chose to stay by his side until the end.
David’s nephew, Kevin Shepherd, said the couple may have been planning the act for some time. Kevin described his uncle as a cheerful and social man, whose illness had deeply affected him. “It is extremely sad to think of them in that position, where they both wanted to take their own lives and go together. But it was their own decision, and they did what they wanted to do,” Kevin added.
David and Susan met in Sheffield in the 1970s after Susan moved from Hemsworth, West Yorkshire. They quickly became inseparable and married, spending over five decades together. After David retired, the couple moved to the coast, initially settling in Skegness before finding a permanent home in Whitby around ten years ago.
This heartbreaking incident has sparked discussions about end-of-life decisions, terminal illness care, and the emotional toll of chronic pain on patients and their loved ones.
