Ukraine is upgrading its air defence system by introducing interceptor drones, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday. These drones will be operated in small teams to detect and stop incoming attacks from the sky.
The move comes as Ukraine prepares for possible new waves of Russian strikes. Earlier this month, Russian attacks damaged power and heating in many apartment buildings, especially in the capital, Kyiv. Thousands of people faced cold temperatures during winter because of the outages.
President Zelenskiy said the new drone system will help Ukraine react faster to attacks and protect its cities more effectively. “We are improving our air defence every day to defend our people,” he added.
The interceptor drones are part of a broader effort to modernize Ukraine’s military. Small teams can move quickly, detect missiles or aircraft, and destroy threats before they reach civilian areas. Military experts say these drones could change the way Ukraine defends against mass attacks.
Ukraine’s armed forces have been under constant pressure since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Both sides have used drones in past attacks, but this new system allows Ukraine to counter threats more efficiently and save lives.
Residents of Kyiv and other cities expressed relief at the announcement. Many said the new defence measures give hope that future attacks will be less damaging.
Analysts warn that Russia may continue large-scale missile and drone strikes, especially during winter months when power and heating are crucial. Ukraine’s new interceptor drones are seen as a key step to reduce the impact of such attacks and strengthen national security.
The government also confirmed that work continues to repair damaged power lines and heating systems, but officials stress that long-term protection depends on strengthening air defence and military readiness.
