UN, Arab Leaders Demand Action Against Israel’s UNRWA Assault

UN, Arab Leaders Demand Action Against Israel’s UNRWA Assault

Post by : Meena Ariff

International and regional leaders have strongly condemned recent Israeli attacks targeting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), highlighting serious violations of international law.

Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit labeled the justifications for the attacks as unlawful, emphasizing that the actions were aimed at undermining UNRWA’s operations and presence in the occupied Palestinian territories. He warned that such measures threaten the agency’s ability to provide critical services to millions of Palestinian refugees.

Mohamed bin Ahmed Al-Yammahi, President of the Arab Parliament, also condemned Israel’s assault, describing it as a blatant violation of international law. He urged the international community to take firm and decisive measures to protect the premises of international organisations and their personnel. Al-Yammahi held the Israeli authorities responsible for the escalation and its broader humanitarian consequences.

Aboul Gheit further called on nations worldwide to intervene immediately to halt attacks on UNRWA. He underlined the agency’s crucial role in delivering education, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance, noting that the United Nations recently renewed its mandate for the organization for another three years.

The coordinated condemnation from both the UN and Arab parliamentary leadership underscores mounting international concern over the targeting of humanitarian organizations in conflict zones, raising urgent calls for accountability and protection of international staff.
