A tragic incident unfolded in California on Monday afternoon when a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was shot dead while responding to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga. The incident led to a high-speed chase across the region, ending with the suspect being knocked off his motorcycle on a freeway.
According to police reports, Deputy Andrew Nunez, a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was fatally shot after responding to reports of an armed man threatening a woman on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive. Authorities say the suspect opened fire on the deputies, hitting Nunez, before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
A massive police chase followed, involving multiple law enforcement agencies across Southern California. The suspect reportedly reached speeds of over 150 miles per hour (240 km/h) as he raced eastbound on the 210 Freeway. Officers used aerial surveillance and road patrol units to track the fleeing suspect through dense traffic.
The chase came to an end when an unmarked police vehicle performed a tactical maneuver, ramming the suspect’s motorcycle and throwing him to the ground. Officials described the move as a “pursuit intervention technique” carried out by a narcotics deputy, which successfully stopped the fleeing gunman without further civilian harm.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that once medically cleared, he will be charged with murder for the death of Deputy Nunez.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus addressed the media in an emotional briefing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “We’re embedded in grief. Unfortunately, this has happened far too often in our department,” Dicus said. “Deputy Nunez was not just a colleague but a husband, a father, and a friend. Our focus now is to support his family and bring the suspect to justice.”
Deputy Nunez, who joined the force six years ago, leaves behind a two-year-old daughter and a pregnant wife. The sheriff’s department and community members have begun setting up support initiatives to help the bereaved family during this difficult time.
This California high-speed chase and shooting have once again raised concerns about officer safety and the increasing risks law enforcement personnel face during field operations. The department has pledged to review response protocols and strengthen safety measures for officers in high-threat situations.
The tragic killing of Deputy Andrew Nunez has shaken the entire law enforcement community, reminding the nation of the dangers faced by those who serve to protect others.
