The United States administration has rejected Russia’s claim that Ukraine attempted a drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, stating that intelligence findings do not support Moscow’s allegations.
According to officials familiar with the assessment, a review by US intelligence agencies concluded that no attack on Putin’s residence had taken place. The evaluation found that Ukraine was instead aiming at a military target it had previously struck, located in the same broader region but far from the Russian leader’s private residence.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had alleged that Ukraine launched dozens of drones toward Putin’s residence in the northern Novgorod region. He claimed the incident could affect Russia’s position in ongoing peace discussions led by the United States.
The allegations briefly drew sympathy from US President Donald Trump, who expressed anger after initial reports. However, following a detailed intelligence briefing, the president reportedly grew skeptical of Russia’s claims and later shared a social media post critical of Moscow’s actions.
Ukraine strongly denied any attempt to target Putin, calling the accusations a deliberate disinformation campaign. Ukrainian officials said the claims were designed to create tension between Kyiv and Washington following recent talks between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
European leaders also dismissed Russia’s allegations. The European Union’s top diplomat described the claims as a calculated distraction, urging the international community not to accept unverified statements from Russia while the conflict continues.
Ukraine further circulated a detailed briefing to European Union officials, arguing that Moscow was attempting to sabotage diplomatic efforts and undermine recent agreements.
Meanwhile, Russia released nighttime footage of a damaged drone found in a snow-covered forest, claiming it supported their version of events. However, US and European officials maintain that the evidence does not confirm an attack on Putin’s residence.
The incident has once again highlighted the deep mistrust and information warfare surrounding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
