In a renewed display of military might, the United States has initiated a series of strikes against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, ramping up efforts following a fatal ambush last month that claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
According to a statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the coordinated strikes occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, targeting numerous IS positions across the region. While specific details about partner nations involved were not disclosed, the Jordanian military confirmed their participation.
The December 2024 ambush resulted in the tragic death of Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, prompting President Donald Trump to authorize these military actions as part of a broader operation dubbed ‘Hawkeye Strike’ aimed at dismantling IS’s remaining networks.
CENTCOM reiterated its resolve with, “If you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice.”
Interestingly, just a day prior to these strikes, Syrian officials announced the capture of the military leader directing IS operations in the Levant, marking significant progress in counterterrorism efforts.
Operation Hawkeye Strike, launched on December 19, has seen a substantial surge of airstrikes targeting nearly 70 locations throughout central Syria, primarily focused on IS infrastructure and logistics.
Historically, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been pivotal in the US-led fight against IS, but following the ousting of former President Bashar Assad, there has been a noticeable shift in collaboration toward the Syrian central government.
Syria’s recent alignment with the global coalition against IS highlights a more united front against the group, which, despite severe territorial losses, continues to represent a significant threat with ongoing deadly operations.
