San Bruno, USA: A routine traffic stop in San Bruno took a surprising turn when US police officers pulled over a car making an illegal U-turn — only to discover there was no driver behind the wheel.
According to authorities, two officers noticed the vehicle performing a wrong U-turn at a traffic signal and moved to stop it. On inspection, they realized the car was fully autonomous, operated by Waymo, with no human controlling it. The San Bruno Police Department shared the incident on social media, noting, “No driver, no hands, no clue.”
Because there was no person driving, officers were unable to issue a citation. “Our citation books don’t have a box for ‘robot,’” the department joked, adding that future laws may allow enforcement actions against companies managing autonomous fleets.
Waymo responded to the incident, stating that their autonomous system is designed to follow traffic rules and the company is investigating the situation to improve its technology.
This is not the first unusual incident involving Waymo. Earlier this year, a Los Angeles tech entrepreneur was trapped in a self-driving vehicle that circled a parking lot for several minutes, causing delays for his flight. The passenger, Mike Johns, described the experience as chaotic and said he would now prefer taxis with human drivers.
The San Bruno Police Department emphasized that safety remains a priority, whether dealing with human drivers, passengers, or autonomous vehicles. They assured the public that they will continue efforts to keep streets safe as self-driving technology becomes more common.
