A newly sworn-in BJP cabinet minister in West Bengal has found himself at the center of a political and public debate after sharing a video of a ride on a luxury touring motorcycle near Kolkata’s Eco Park. The video, which was posted on social media platform X, quickly attracted attention from supporters and critics alike.
The 61-year-old minister was seen riding a premium 1,833cc motorcycle, a high-end touring machine valued between ₹48 lakh and ₹53 lakh. In his post, he praised the motorcycle’s comfort, performance, and smooth riding experience while also highlighting what he described as improved road infrastructure and reduced traffic congestion under the current administration.
However, the video soon sparked controversy after viewers noticed that the minister was not wearing a helmet during the ride. Critics pointed out that riding without a helmet is a violation of motor vehicle regulations in West Bengal and can result in penalties. Many questioned whether public representatives should be setting a stronger example when it comes to road safety compliance.
The debate expanded beyond road safety as attention turned to the motorcycle itself. Social media users highlighted the vehicle’s luxury price tag and relatively low fuel efficiency, estimated at around 10 to 12 kilometers per litre in city conditions. Some commentators argued that the optics of riding such an expensive motorcycle could appear insensitive at a time when fuel conservation and responsible consumption are being widely discussed.
The issue gained further traction because Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption and adopt energy-conscious habits amid global economic and energy-related challenges. Critics argued that public officials should be mindful of the messages conveyed through their public appearances and social media activities.
Supporters of the minister, however, defended the ride as a harmless personal moment that showcased improved road conditions and infrastructure development. They argued that the focus should remain on the positive aspects of transportation improvements rather than on a brief recreational ride.
As reactions continue across political circles and social media platforms, the incident has reignited discussions about accountability, road safety, public image, and the responsibilities of elected leaders. Whether viewed as a simple leisure activity or a lapse in judgment, the episode has become another example of how public actions can quickly become subjects of national debate in the digital age.
