China achieved another major milestone in its rapidly advancing space program as three astronauts safely returned to Earth after spending nearly seven months aboard the Tiangong space station. The successful landing of the Shenzhou-21 crew marks the longest continuous space mission ever completed by Chinese astronauts and highlights the country's growing ambitions in human space exploration.
The return capsule carrying astronauts Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang touched down safely at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia on May 29, 2026. Recovery teams quickly reached the capsule and assisted the crew after their record-breaking mission in orbit. The mission is being viewed as another important step toward China's long-term goal of sending astronauts to the Moon before 2030.
During their extended stay aboard the Tiangong space station, the astronauts carried out a wide range of scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, equipment maintenance activities, and operational tasks. The crew also transferred valuable research data and remaining supplies while preparing the station for the arrival of the next team of astronauts.
One of the mission’s standout achievements was the completion of three successful spacewalks. Veteran astronaut Zhang Lu further strengthened his place in China's space history by completing his seventh career spacewalk, the highest number recorded by any Chinese astronaut to date. The accomplishment demonstrates China's increasing capability to conduct complex operations outside its space station.
Speaking after his return, Zhang Lu expressed deep gratitude to his family, colleagues, and the thousands of engineers and scientists who supported the mission. Fellow astronaut Zhang Hongzhang reflected on the experience of viewing Earth from space, describing humanity as a shared global community connected beyond borders and geography.
The mission also ensured a smooth transition between crews. Before departing, the Shenzhou-21 astronauts shared operational knowledge and experiences with the newly arrived Shenzhou-23 crew. Among the new astronauts is Lai Ka-ying, the first astronaut from Hong Kong to participate in a Chinese space mission, marking another historic moment for the nation’s space program.
China continues to expand its presence in space through ambitious projects involving lunar exploration, advanced scientific research, and long-duration human missions. With the Tiangong space station operating successfully and preparations underway for a future Moon landing, the country is positioning itself as one of the world's leading space powers in the coming decades.
