Funeral prayers were held in Gaza City after ten Palestinians, including five children, an elderly person, and a Hamas fighter, were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes during the Eid al-Adha holiday. The attacks also left more than twenty people injured, according to medical officials at Shifa Hospital.
Witnesses described scenes of devastation as flames engulfed parts of a residential building following the strikes. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to rescue victims trapped under debris and transport the wounded to nearby hospitals. Images from the area showed grieving families gathering as the holiday celebrations were overshadowed by renewed violence.
Among those killed was Hamas militant Imad Isleim, whose funeral drew dozens of mourners in Gaza City. Family members expressed shock and sorrow over his death, while emphasizing the continuing toll the conflict is taking on civilians and communities across the territory.
The Israeli military stated that the operation targeted Hamas militants in northern Gaza. The strikes came on the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important religious festivals in the Islamic calendar, adding to the emotional impact felt by families already affected by months of conflict.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is expanding its operational control in Gaza. Speaking at a conference in the Jordan Valley, Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces currently control around 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and indicated plans to increase that presence further as military operations continue against Hamas.
The latest escalation follows the reported killing of Mohammed Odeh, recently appointed commander of Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades. His death came less than two weeks after the killing of his predecessor, marking another significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
According to Gaza's health authorities, sixteen people were killed and thirty-nine injured across the territory during the previous forty-eight hours. Officials also reported that hundreds of people have been killed or wounded since the fragile ceasefire arrangements began last year, highlighting the continued instability and humanitarian challenges facing the region.
As diplomatic efforts struggle to secure a lasting peace, the situation in Gaza remains tense, with civilians continuing to bear the heaviest burden of the conflict. The latest violence underscores the fragile nature of existing ceasefire arrangements and the uncertainty surrounding future developments in the region.
