China has reportedly deployed a massive underwater data center weighing around 1,300 tons off the coast near Hainan, marking a significant advancement in next-generation digital infrastructure and sustainable computing technology.
The facility is located approximately 35 meters below the surface of the sea and is designed to support high-performance computing tasks including cloud services, artificial intelligence operations, and large-scale data processing.
According to officials, the underwater placement allows the system to use natural seawater as a cooling mechanism, significantly reducing the need for traditional energy-intensive cooling systems used in land-based data centers.
This approach is expected to lower overall electricity consumption and operational costs while improving efficiency in handling large volumes of digital data.
The project is part of China’s broader strategy to develop green and sustainable technology infrastructure while reducing pressure on land resources and freshwater usage.
By moving critical digital infrastructure underwater, engineers aim to address long-term challenges such as rising energy demand, urban land shortages, and environmental sustainability concerns.
The underwater data center is also expected to enhance stability and performance by maintaining naturally cool operating conditions, which can help extend equipment lifespan and reduce overheating risks.
Experts view the initiative as a bold step in integrating marine engineering with digital technology, potentially setting a model for future global data infrastructure projects.
