A severe tropical storm swept across southwestern Japan on June 2, causing widespread disruptions as strong winds and heavy rainfall affected several regions. Tropical Storm Jangmi, which was earlier classified as a typhoon before weakening, continued moving northward after striking the southern island region of Okinawa.
Authorities reported that tens of thousands of households experienced power outages as the storm battered communities with intense winds and heavy rain. Utility crews were deployed to restore electricity while emergency teams monitored weather-related incidents across affected areas.
The storm also caused significant travel disruptions. Hundreds of domestic and international flights were canceled or delayed as airports faced adverse weather conditions. Transportation operators urged travelers to check schedules regularly as conditions continued to change throughout the day.
According to local officials, at least nine people suffered injuries linked to the storm. Most injuries were reported as weather-related accidents caused by strong winds, falling objects, and slippery conditions. Emergency services remained on high alert as the storm advanced through the region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings for dangerous high waves, possible landslides, flooding, and overflowing rivers. Residents living in vulnerable coastal and mountainous areas were advised to remain cautious and follow evacuation instructions if necessary. Authorities also warned that saturated ground conditions could increase the risk of landslides even after rainfall begins to weaken.
Okinawa experienced some of the most severe impacts as the storm passed near the subtropical island. Strong gusts, rough seas, and heavy downpours disrupted daily activities and affected businesses. Local governments activated emergency response measures to ensure public safety and minimize damage.
Meteorologists continue to track Storm Jangmi as it moves northward. While the system has weakened from typhoon strength, officials caution that it still carries the potential to produce dangerous weather conditions. Residents across affected regions have been urged to stay informed through official forecasts and weather advisories as recovery efforts continue.
