DGCA Slaps Record ₹22.20 Crore Fine on IndiGo After Mass Flight Chaos | 3 Lakh Passengers Hit

Post by : Meena Ariff

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has levied a record ₹22.20 crore fine on IndiGo Airlines following a probe into the massive flight cancellations and delays that occurred in December 2025. The disruptions affected more than 300,000 passengers, drawing widespread criticism and regulatory scrutiny.

The DGCA investigation uncovered serious operational and planning lapses within the airline, including inadequate crew scheduling, maintenance planning issues, and poor contingency management. These deficiencies, the regulator noted, contributed directly to the large-scale cancellations and delays that disrupted travel across India.

As part of the findings, the DGCA issued warnings to senior IndiGo executives, holding them accountable for lapses in oversight and operational management. The regulator has also directed the airline to take corrective measures, including improving compliance systems, strengthening operational planning, and ensuring better coordination between departments to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response, IndiGo said it will address the regulator’s concerns and take steps to enhance operational efficiency. The airline emphasized its commitment to improving passenger experience and ensuring reliable service. It noted that the December disruptions were an unprecedented challenge and assured that measures would be implemented to prevent recurrence.

Industry experts suggest that this fine serves as a strong signal to Indian airlines that regulators are taking operational lapses seriously, particularly when they impact large numbers of passengers. With travel demand rebounding, the DGCA is likely to continue closely monitoring airline operations to maintain safety and reliability standards.
