Tensions escalated in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo after angry residents attacked and set fire to parts of an Ebola treatment centre in the Rwampara area of Ituri Province. The violence erupted following outrage over the handling of a local man who died during the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
According to local reports, residents became furious after authorities refused to return the victim’s body to his family due to strict Ebola burial protocols. The disagreement quickly triggered protests outside the treatment facility, where demonstrators accused health officials of lacking transparency and disrespecting local customs.
Videos and eyewitness accounts from the scene showed medical tents and sections of the Ebola treatment centre engulfed in flames as protesters vandalised the site. Several Ebola response facilities used for patient care and emergency operations were reportedly damaged during the unrest.
Police and security forces were deployed to control the rapidly worsening situation. Authorities fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd and restore order as clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement personnel.
Health officials warned that attacks on treatment centres could seriously affect ongoing efforts to contain the deadly Bundibugyo strain Ebola outbreak. Medical teams are continuing emergency operations while urging communities to cooperate with safety measures designed to stop the spread of the virus.
The incident highlights growing mistrust between residents and health authorities in parts of the region, where fear, misinformation and cultural tensions have complicated previous Ebola response campaigns. Officials continue to call for calm as the outbreak remains a serious public health concern.
