Police in Johor have arrested a 28-year-old man following serious allegations involving the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old schoolgirl in the Seri Alam area near Johor Bahru. The case gained widespread public attention after claims about the incident circulated rapidly on social media platforms.
According to acting Johor police chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat, authorities first detected a viral Facebook post discussing the alleged abuse before receiving an official police report from the victim’s mother later that evening. The report stated that the incident had allegedly taken place last year.
Police officers from the Seri Alam district Criminal Investigation Department launched an immediate operation after gathering information linked to the suspect. Authorities confirmed that the man was arrested on the same night at around 10.30pm in Johor.
Investigators revealed that drug screening tests conducted on the suspect returned negative results and preliminary background checks found no prior criminal record. Police have also submitted a remand application to continue further investigations into the case.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 14(a) of Malaysia’s Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. The law covers physical sexual assault against minors and carries severe punishment including imprisonment of up to 20 years along with whipping if convicted.
The allegations sparked widespread concern among parents and local residents after reports suggested complaints about the individual had previously been lodged with police and education authorities. Social media discussions intensified after claims emerged that the accused had contact with the victim through the school environment.
Authorities later identified the suspect as a teacher’s assistant in his twenties who had reportedly been reassigned temporarily before returning to teaching-related duties. The case has renewed debate in Malaysia about child safety measures, school monitoring systems and the protection of students within educational institutions.
Police have urged the public not to spread unverified information online while investigations remain ongoing. Officials also encouraged anyone with additional information related to the case to cooperate with investigators.
