A political controversy erupted in Kerala after the full version of the national song “Vande Mataram” was recited during the swearing-in ceremony of the Congress-led UDF Cabinet. The issue quickly turned into a heated debate between Left parties and the BJP, with both sides accusing each other of misusing nationalism and secularism for political purposes.
The CPIM strongly objected to the full recital of the song and described the move as inappropriate for a pluralistic and secular society. Party leaders argued that only the approved opening lines of “Vande Mataram” should be used during official government functions, as decided historically by national leaders and the Constituent Assembly.
CPI leader Binoy Viswam said the decision to limit the national song in the past was based on maintaining India’s secular character. He stated that some portions of the song carry religious symbolism that may not align with the vision of an inclusive nation promoted by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
The controversy intensified after the BJP accused Left parties of insulting the national song to appease radical groups. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar attacked the Communists and said Marxist ideology had failed to understand Indian culture and traditions. He alleged that the Left was indulging in appeasement politics by questioning “Vande Mataram.”
Sources in the newly formed Kerala government reportedly distanced themselves from the row and clarified that the programme arrangements were handled by Lok Bhavan authorities. Government insiders claimed there was no political intention behind the complete recital during the oath-taking ceremony.
The CPIM further pointed out that even several BJP-ruled states do not perform the complete version of “Vande Mataram” during official events. The party warned that such decisions could weaken the country’s secular fabric and create unnecessary divisions in society.
The issue has now triggered wider political discussions across Kerala, with social media users and political leaders debating nationalism, constitutional traditions, and the role of religion in public ceremonies. The controversy is expected to remain a major political talking point in the coming days.
