A satirical online movement called the Cockroach Janta Party has rapidly gone viral across India, attracting millions of young supporters frustrated with unemployment, rising living costs and political dissatisfaction. What started as an internet parody has now become one of the country’s biggest online political discussions.
The movement was created by Abhijeet Dipke, a political communications strategist and student at Boston University. The party uses the cockroach as its symbol, presenting it as a sign of survival and resilience during difficult times faced by many young Indians.
Within just a few days of launching its social media accounts, the Cockroach Janta Party gained massive popularity online. Its Instagram account reportedly crossed more than 15 million followers, surpassing several major political parties on the platform and drawing nationwide attention.
The movement gained momentum after controversial remarks made by Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant during a court hearing. His comments comparing some unemployed youths and activists to “cockroaches” triggered outrage among many young people who felt ignored and insulted over ongoing economic struggles and job shortages.
Soon after the remarks spread online, the parody party began posting memes, satirical campaign slogans and humorous political videos targeting corruption, unemployment, exam paper leaks and government inefficiency. Thousands of online volunteers reportedly joined the campaign through digital sign-up forms.
The party’s manifesto mixes humor with criticism of real political issues in India. It mocks unemployment, media influence, political corruption and public frustration while using absurd comedy to express deeper concerns about the country’s social and economic challenges.
Supporters say the movement reflects growing anger among Indian youth who feel disconnected from traditional politics. Critics, however, argue that the campaign is simply an internet trend and may not develop into a serious political force on the ground.
The movement has already started appearing beyond social media, with some supporters attending protests dressed in cockroach costumes. At the same time, reports emerged that one of the party’s accounts on X was temporarily restricted in India, further increasing public curiosity around the unusual campaign.
Observers believe the sudden rise of the Cockroach Janta Party highlights the growing role of satire, memes and digital activism in shaping political conversations among India’s younger generation.
