A violent attack targeted the home of a Hindu teacher in Sylhet, sparking fear and outrage among local communities and human rights activists. The house of Birendra Kumar Dey, popularly known as “Jhunu Sir,” was set on fire late Wednesday night in what witnesses describe as a deliberate act of arson.

Videos circulating on social media show thick flames and smoke engulfing the two-story house, while the terrified family scrambled to escape the blaze. Neighbors reported hearing shouts and chaos as the fire spread rapidly, consuming furniture and household belongings. Fortunately, the family managed to flee unharmed, but the house suffered extensive damage.

Local residents and community leaders expressed deep concern over the growing pattern of attacks against minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, who have historically faced targeted violence in the region. Several activists and rights groups condemned the incident as part of a “disturbing trend of intimidation and violence” aimed at religious minorities.

“This is not an isolated incident. Minority communities, especially Hindus, are increasingly feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods,” said Rina Begum, a local human rights activist. She called for immediate government action, including increased security measures and a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for the attack.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire appeared to have been set deliberately, as gasoline containers were found near the front entrance of the house. The local police have registered a case and launched an investigation, though no arrests have been made yet. Authorities have urged calm and assured residents that security forces are monitoring the area.

The attack has heightened fear among Hindu communities in Sylhet and surrounding districts, with many families reportedly locking their doors and staying indoors in the aftermath. Community organizations have appealed for state protection, citing repeated incidents where minority homes, temples, and businesses have been vandalized or destroyed.

This incident comes amid a broader backdrop of religious tension and communal violence in Bangladesh, where minority groups, including Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists, have faced sporadic attacks, harassment, and displacement over the years. Analysts warn that if not addressed swiftly, such incidents could further erode social cohesion and security for vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, social media has been flooded with messages of solidarity for Jhunu Sir and his family. Many users have called on the Bangladesh government to take strong measures to ensure the safety of minorities, stressing that the country’s constitutional commitment to equality and religious freedom must be upheld.

The Sylhet district administration has pledged to provide emergency relief to the family, including temporary shelter and assistance to recover essential belongings lost in the fire. Human rights groups, however, insist that protection of life and property must go beyond temporary relief, advocating for a long-term security plan to prevent such attacks in the future.

As investigations continue, this latest attack serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh, and the urgent need for robust law enforcement, community support, and political will to safeguard vulnerable citizens.
