A powerful 7.1- magnitude earthquake has struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan, causing widespread destruction, power outages and transport disruption. The death toll, initially reported at 13, has now risen to at least 18, while rescue teams continue searching damaged buildings. Authorities have warned residents to remain alert for strong aftershocks and possible landslides.
