A powerful sandstorm swept across western Rajasthan, causing widespread disruption to solar power generation facilities and damaging critical renewable energy infrastructure. Strong winds carrying dense dust and sand engulfed large solar parks, reducing visibility and affecting electricity output across multiple plants.
Officials reported that solar panels were coated with thick layers of dust, significantly reducing their efficiency and forcing temporary shutdowns in several areas. In some locations, high-speed winds also caused physical damage to mounting structures and electrical equipment.
The sudden storm highlights the growing vulnerability of renewable energy systems in desert regions, where extreme weather events can directly impact power generation stability. Rajasthan, which hosts some of India’s largest solar energy projects, has been increasingly exposed to such climatic challenges.
Energy experts say that while solar power remains a key pillar of India’s clean energy transition, extreme weather patterns such as sandstorms, heatwaves, and dust storms are becoming a major operational risk factor.
