NASA aircraft makes emergency belly landing after landing gear failure

Post by : Meena Ariff

A NASA WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft was forced to perform an emergency belly landing at Ellington Airport in Houston, Texas, after experiencing a landing gear failure during touchdown. The incident occurred when the plane’s landing gear failed to deploy properly, leaving the aircraft unable to extend its wheels for a normal landing.

Video footage captured the dramatic moment as the WB-57 skidded along the runway, with smoke and flames visible from underneath the aircraft as friction caused sparks and minor fire. Despite the alarming visuals, the plane gradually slowed to a safe stop without any major damage to the crew or the aircraft structure.

NASA quickly confirmed that the incident was due to a mechanical issue affecting the landing gear system. The agency emphasized that all crew members on board were unharmed and accounted for following the emergency landing. The prompt and professional response from the flight crew ensured the safety of everyone involved and minimized potential damage.

Following the incident, investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of the landing gear malfunction. The WB-57 is a specialized aircraft used by NASA for high-altitude scientific research and atmospheric studies. Efforts to repair the aircraft and resume its mission are expected to follow after a thorough safety review.
