A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines, causing widespread destruction and leaving at least 37 people dead, hundreds injured, and thousands displaced from their homes. The quake, centered off the coast of Mindanao near Sarangani Province, is among the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in recent years.
The massive tremor triggered panic across several provinces as buildings shook violently, forcing residents to rush into open areas for safety. Multiple structures collapsed, roads were damaged, and landslides buried homes in some mountainous communities, complicating rescue and relief operations.
Authorities reported that hundreds of people sustained injuries, while more than 20,000 residents were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in temporary evacuation centers. Emergency shelters have been activated across affected regions to provide food, medical assistance, and basic necessities to displaced families.
The earthquake also caused widespread power outages and disruptions to communication networks, making it difficult for emergency teams to reach some of the hardest-hit locations. Search and rescue personnel continue to inspect damaged buildings and debris fields in an effort to locate possible survivors.
Following the quake, tsunami alerts were temporarily issued for several coastal areas, prompting precautionary evacuations. Although the warnings were later lifted, authorities continue to monitor coastal conditions and advise residents to remain vigilant.
Government agencies and disaster response teams are conducting detailed damage assessments as strong aftershocks continue to shake the region. Experts warn that weakened buildings and unstable slopes remain a significant threat to communities already impacted by the disaster.
