Approximately 100 people were killed in a U.S. military operation that removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power, escalating the country’s political crisis. The casualties include military personnel, security forces, and possibly civilians. The Venezuelan army confirmed 23 soldier deaths, and Cuba reported 32 Cuban military and intelligence personnel killed during the raid.
Maduro was injured, reportedly with a leg wound, and his wife, Cilia Flores, sustained a head injury. Both were captured and later appeared in a U.S. court facing drug trafficking charges.
In response, interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared seven days of national mourning, with state funerals held for fallen troops. The Venezuelan government condemned the U.S. action as a violation of sovereignty and international law, calling for investigations into alleged war crimes.
The U.S. has not confirmed casualty numbers but defended the operation as necessary to remove an authoritarian leader involved in corruption and drug trafficking. The raid has sparked strong international reactions and humanitarian concerns.
