Far-Right Rally in Vitoria Turns Violent 17 Arrested by Police

Far-Right Rally in Vitoria Turns Violent 17 Arrested by Police

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Vitoria, Spain – A far-right rally in Vitoria escalated into violence on Sunday, leading Spanish authorities to arrest 17 people after clashes between fascist supporters and counter-protesters.

The demonstration, organized by the Falange – a group claiming to continue the legacy of former dictator Francisco Franco – took place as Spain marked the 50th anniversary of Franco’s death. Supporters gathered in a central square in the northern Basque city to defend what they called "the unity of Spain," brandishing red and gold Spanish flags and performing fascist salutes.

Violence broke out when hooded counter-protesters appeared at the scene. Footage shared on social media showed protesters from both sides striking each other with flags, poles, chairs, and flares. Waste containers were reportedly set on fire during the clashes.

Basque police confirmed that 17 individuals were arrested for public disorder. Around 20 officers suffered minor injuries, and medical staff treated several protesters at the scene.

Authorities described the incident as a confrontation between “radical groups” and warned against such violent displays. The rally comes amid heightened tensions in Spain over Franco’s divisive legacy, with debates continuing over his regime’s historical impact.

Police have called for calm and urged residents to avoid involvement in such rallies, emphasizing that public safety will be a priority in future demonstrations.
