Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Overtime Triumph Against Pelicans

Post by : Maya Rahman

Victor Wembanyama delivered an impressive performance with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 blocks, propelling the San Antonio Spurs to a thrilling 120-116 overtime victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. His effort kept the team in contention throughout this tightly contested matchup.

Wembanyama received significant support from his teammates. Devin Vassell contributed a pivotal 3-pointer, while Stephon Castle added vital free throws, and Harrison Barnes nailed important shots down the stretch. Luke Kornet chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds, with rookie Dylan Harper adding 13 points to the overtime effort.

The Pelicans fought hard, with Zion Williamson leading their charge with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Murphy III followed with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Poole contributed 21 points. However, despite their valiant attempts, New Orleans couldn't secure a late-game comeback.

The match was tightly contested leading to an overtime finish. Wembanyama initially performed well but fouled out, trusting his fellow Spurs to close the game. Key free throws and Vassell's critical three-pointer helped the Spurs gain the upper hand, even as the Pelicans mounted a late rally.

The first half was fiercely competitive, with the Spurs trailing briefly. Both Wembanyama and Luke Kornet scored 12 points, alongside Vassell's 11 points. At the halftime buzzer, the Pelicans led narrowly at 58-57, with Poole's 14 points, Murphy's 13, and Williamson's 12 points and 6 rebounds.

San Antonio's victory improves their record to 2-0, showcasing their team cohesion and grit. Meanwhile, the Pelicans, now sitting at 0-2, showed promise but will need to bolster their late-game defense moving forward. This game exemplified Wembanyama's potential and San Antonio's united approach.
