The Pelicans fought hard, with Zion Williamson leading their charge with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Murphy III followed with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Poole contributed 21 points. However, despite their valiant attempts, New Orleans couldn't secure a late-game comeback.
The match was tightly contested leading to an overtime finish. Wembanyama initially performed well but fouled out, trusting his fellow Spurs to close the game. Key free throws and Vassell's critical three-pointer helped the Spurs gain the upper hand, even as the Pelicans mounted a late rally.
The first half was fiercely competitive, with the Spurs trailing briefly. Both Wembanyama and Luke Kornet scored 12 points, alongside Vassell's 11 points. At the halftime buzzer, the Pelicans led narrowly at 58-57, with Poole's 14 points, Murphy's 13, and Williamson's 12 points and 6 rebounds.
San Antonio's victory improves their record to 2-0, showcasing their team cohesion and grit. Meanwhile, the Pelicans, now sitting at 0-2, showed promise but will need to bolster their late-game defense moving forward. This game exemplified Wembanyama's potential and San Antonio's united approach.
