Wizz Air has officially closed its Abu Dhabi base as of September 1, 2025, ending its direct operations in the UAE. Despite the closure, travelers can still book Wizz Air flights to Abu Dhabi, which will continue to operate from the airline’s European hubs.
The decision follows operational challenges, including engine performance issues in extreme heat and regional geopolitical concerns. Experts note that maintaining a full base in Abu Dhabi had become difficult for the ultra-low-cost carrier.
Although the hub closure limits direct local options, Wizz Air will maintain its presence in the UAE market. Starting November 14, the airline will launch new flights connecting Abu Dhabi to Larnaca, with fares beginning at Dh192 one-way. This strategy allows Wizz Air to serve the UAE market efficiently without the costs of a local base.
Industry analysts suggest that this move reflects a broader trend among low-cost carriers to optimize operations and route networks while remaining flexible amid regional uncertainties. Passengers can still enjoy connectivity to Abu Dhabi through European hubs, ensuring the city remains accessible for budget travelers.
