Yemen is witnessing a surge in tensions as the Saudi-led coalition disclosed on Thursday that the United Arab Emirates facilitated the escape of prominent separatist leader, Aidarous al-Zubaidi. Zubaidi leads the Southern Transitional Council (STC), an organization supported by the UAE that has been at the forefront of recent conflicts in southern Yemen. Observers noted that Saudi-backed forces are making significant advances in Aden, a crucial southern city in Yemen.
Reports from coalition representatives indicate Zubaidi first traveled via boat to Somaliland before boarding a plane to Mogadishu, eventually arriving at a military airport in Abu Dhabi. His abrupt exit followed his absence from urgent discussions in Riyadh between Saudi Arabia and the STC addressing escalating unrest in southern Yemen. The STC claims that Zubaidi faced threats and was urged to go to Saudi Arabia, while his relocation to the UAE introduces added tensions among Gulf allies.
This incident highlights the increasing discord between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Despite both being key oil producers and U.S. allies, their interests in regional matters like the conflict in Yemen diverge significantly. The coalition emphasized that UAE personnel supervised Zubaidi and others’ travel, underscoring the UAE’s proactive foreign policy in the area.
In the meantime, reports indicate that Saudi-backed government forces are reestablishing their presence in Aden. Previously under STC control following a separatist takeover last month, the city’s reclaimed strategic areas have prompted leaders of the internationally recognized government to seek safety in Saudi Arabia. While full control has yet to be officially confirmed, local officials and witnesses have noted the advancing Saudi-backed forces.
The developments suggest possible fissures among the separatist leadership. An STC delegation reportedly engaged with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen in Riyadh, indicating potential internal conflicts within the group. Such disunity could further complicate stabilization efforts in southern Yemen, already grappling with one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
The UAE’s role in aiding Zubaidi’s escape signifies its strategic prowess throughout the Middle East and Africa. Although the UAE has withdrawn the majority of its forces from Yemen, it continues to play a significant role in regional politics. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia maintains its focus on counteracting Houthi forces in the north and safeguarding the south, including vital border areas.
As events unfold, the contesting priorities of Saudi Arabia and the UAE pose substantial implications for Yemen and the broader Gulf region. International analysts caution that without ongoing dialogue, the likelihood of further turmoil and conflict escalates, threatening a country already reeling from prolonged warfare.
