Russian forces launched a large drone attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine late Tuesday. The attack caused several fires, injured 19 people, and damaged many buildings and vehicles. The regional governor, Ivan Fedorov, shared updates on the situation via the messaging app Telegram.
According to Fedorov, the attack destroyed shops, damaged 31 apartment buildings, and harmed 20 private homes. Eight injured people are currently receiving treatment in hospitals. Rescue teams are working at 12 different locations to help those affected. Firefighters were seen battling fires in high-rise buildings, and damaged vehicles were visible on city streets.
Ukraine’s air force reported that it intercepted and destroyed 72 out of 90 drones and two ballistic missiles launched by Russia during the overnight attack, which targeted multiple locations across the country.
The Zaporizhzhia region is partly controlled by Russian forces, who have made some advances recently. However, the city of Zaporizhzhia itself remains under Ukrainian control. The head of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia region, Yevgeny Belitsky, said that Ukrainian forces attacked power grid infrastructure in areas held by Russia. This caused power outages affecting 40,000 people in several towns.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in conflict in the region. Emergency services and medical teams are actively working to support the victims and manage the damage caused by the attack.
