Zohran Mamdani, New York City's Mayor-elect, recently shared an unusual experience from his meeting with former President Donald Trump at the White House. During an interview on a web show, Mamdani revealed he noticed a "UFC" coffee table book among Trump's reading materials. He was surprised to learn that the White House had hosted a mixed martial arts event on its South Lawn earlier this year. Mamdani described flipping through the book, which showed images of the UFC's octagon-shaped cage set up in the White House grounds.
The UFC event was part of America's 250th anniversary celebration, scheduled to coincide with Trump's 80th birthday in June 2026. When asked if he planned to attend the event, Mamdani laughed and said, "No."
Despite this unusual encounter, Mamdani has been vocal about his political views. In a separate interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he reaffirmed his strong opinions about Trump, describing him as a "fascist" and a "despot." This came just days after their surprisingly friendly meeting at the White House. When a reporter asked Mamdani if he still saw Trump as a threat to democracy, Mamdani responded firmly, saying he stood by his previous statements and emphasized the importance of honest political disagreement.
During a joint media appearance, an unexpected moment went viral online. When a reporter asked Mamdani if he still viewed Trump as a fascist, Trump interrupted, encouraging him to say it openly, showing an unusual camaraderie between the two figures. This interaction caught the attention of many across social media.
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, was elected as New York City's mayor-elect at the age of 34. Known for his progressive views, he has been critical of Trump but maintained a respectful and professional tone during their White House meeting. Mamdani’s remarks about the UFC event and his political stance have sparked conversations about politics and culture in the United States.
