The PGA Tour has decided to cancel its season-opening event, The Sentry, which was set for January 8-11, 2026. Originally scheduled to take place at Kapalua's Plantation Course in Maui since 1999, the ongoing drought conditions made it impossible to conduct the tournament while ensuring proper conservation of local water resources.
While initial discussions hinted at possible relocation, efforts to identify an alternative venue were hindered by sponsor commitments, course availability, and the logistical demands of holding a PGA Tour event during one of the busiest tourism seasons.
This cancellation has been made in conjunction with Sentry Insurance and the Governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, with a priority on protecting the local community's water supply and welfare. Tyler Dennis, Chief Competitions Officer for the PGA Tour, expressed regret over the decision but appreciated the support from partners like Sentry Insurance.
The absence of The Sentry represents a significant shift in the PGA Tour calendar, which will now kick off on January 15 with the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Hawaii. Previously, the tour’s Genesis Invitational moved locations this year due to wildfires in Los Angeles, ultimately taking place successfully at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
Although the long-term future of The Sentry remains uncertain, it is known that the sponsorship agreement with the PGA Tour continues until 2035. This tournament has long been a highlight of the season, showcasing all past PGA Tour champions and the top 50 finishers from the FedEx Cup, with Hideki Matsuyama as the defending champion.
In light of the cancellation, players not finishing in the FedEx Cup’s top 50, yet winning a tournament in 2025, will be given a chance to compete in another key event, the RBC Heritage in April. The amended 2026 PGA Tour calendar now features eight signature events, with the introduction of The Miami Championship at Trump National Doral's Blue Monster course later in April. The season kicks off with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in early February.
The Sentry has been a beloved event for fans, airing in primetime on the East Coast and presenting a tropical backdrop during winter months when many golfers are confined indoors. Its cancellation highlights the PGA Tour's commitment to environmental issues while still ensuring players have competitive opportunities in the 2026 season.
