AIIMS Raipur Doctor Issues Caution About Common Antibiotic Risks

AIIMS Raipur Doctor Issues Caution About Common Antibiotic Risks

Post by : Saif Rahman

In India, there is a prevalent habit of using antibiotics, often without medical consultation. Whenever someone experiences fever, cough, or a mild infection, antibiotics are typically seen as a quick fix. However, health professionals are now raising alarms about the dangers of this practice. Dr. Parwez Alam, a seasoned urologist at AIIMS Raipur with over 15 years of experience, recently highlighted these concerns.

Dr. Alam pointed out a specific antibiotic that may have severe side effects if misused. He noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a Black Box Warning on this medication. This designation is the most severe warning available for drugs, indicating that the medication can lead to harmful effects and must be administered with utmost caution.

As per Dr. Alam, this antibiotic is notorious for causing damage to tendons, the tissues that connect muscles to bones. Damage to these tendons can result in debilitating pain, weakness, and, in severe cases, may hinder mobility permanently. He also pointed out that some individuals have developed uncontrolled diabetes as a side effect, complicating their blood sugar management.

Additionally, Dr. Alam mentioned that the drug could induce nerve-related issues, causing symptoms like numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in extremities. Such nerve damage can disrupt everyday activities and may not fully recover.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that this antibiotic remains widely prescribed and can be easily purchased at pharmacies, often without requiring a prescription. Dr. Alam strongly advised against using antibiotics without a doctor's recommendation, particularly warning parents against administering these medications to their children or teenagers, as it can adversely affect their development.

Global health experts are also concerned that excessive antibiotic use can lead to bacterial resistance, meaning that future infections, even common ones, could become hard to treat.

Dr. Alam's recommendations include:

  • Avoid taking antibiotics unless advised by a healthcare professional.

  • Do not insist on antibiotics from healthcare providers if not deemed necessary.

  • Complete the prescribed course if antibiotics are given.

  • Refrain from self-medication.

This warning is crucial for the general public. Drugs can save lives, but only when utilized correctly. Exercising caution today can safeguard your health tomorrow.
