Sharks Clinch 6-5 Overtime Victory Against Rangers with Celebrini's Hat Trick

Sharks Clinch 6-5 Overtime Victory Against Rangers with Celebrini's Hat Trick

Post by : Maya Rahman

Macklin Celebrini shined brightly by netting his second career hat trick and facilitating Will Smith's game-winning goal in overtime. This impressive performance led the San Jose Sharks to a 6-5 victory against the New York Rangers on Thursday night, marking their first win of the 2025-26 NHL season after an initial streak of four losses and two overtime setbacks.

Celebrini achieved a goal in the opening frame and added two more in the second, becoming just the 15th player in NHL history to achieve multiple hat tricks before the age of 20. His remarkable play in front of the net indicates his potential role as a cornerstone for the Sharks as they navigate their rebuilding journey. In the overtime period, he set up Smith’s goal right after a lengthy 5-on-3 power play concluded, sealing the victory.

Currently in a rebuilding phase, San Jose is placing its faith in the promising talents of Celebrini, Smith, and the recently drafted Michael Misa, who was picked second overall in 2025. Celebrini’s on-ice leadership and scoring prowess highlight the Sharks’ youthful core, providing optimism for fans as the season unfolds.

For the Rangers, despite Taylor Raddysh scoring three goals, this defeat marks their fifth consecutive home loss at the season's start—something not seen since the 1943-44 season. The team struggled with defensive stability, allowing six goals even after netting five of their own. Additional contributions came from Mika Zibanejad and Juuso Parssinen, each adding to the Rangers’ scoreline.

The Rangers also faced difficulties as forward Matt Rempe exited the game with an upper-body injury after a first-period altercation with Ryan Reaves, leaving the team shorthanded and hampering their chances to rally back. The ongoing absence of key players is becoming a significant hurdle for New York as the season progresses.

The overtime segment highlighted the Sharks’ determination and Celebrini’s ability to create plays. Will Smith scored just 1:38 into the 3-on-3 overtime, thanks to Celebrini’s perfect setup for the decisive goal. This exhilarating conclusion showcased the vibrancy and potential of San Jose’s young roster, underlining their capability to compete against established NHL teams despite their early hardships.

With their first victory, the Sharks gain a boost in momentum and confidence, while the Rangers must work to shift their dismal start at Madison Square Garden. As they carry on in the early weeks of the 2025-26 season, both teams are likely to refine their strategies and rely on their standout players.
