Zhimin Qian, a Chinese national, has been convicted in London for orchestrating one of the largest cryptocurrency crimes in history, involving over 61,000 bitcoins valued at $6.7 billion. Known also as Yadi Zhang, Qian pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court for illegally acquiring and holding these digital assets.
Between 2014 and 2017, Qian defrauded more than 128,000 investors in China through a large-scale investment scam. To conceal the illicit origin of the funds, she converted the stolen money into bitcoin. Many of her victims reportedly knew little about her, often referring to her as the "goddess of wealth."
The investigation began in 2018 after UK authorities received intelligence about suspicious cryptocurrency transfers. Qian had fled China using forged documents and entered the UK, attempting to launder her crypto fortune by buying luxury properties.
Detective Sergeant Isabella Grotto, who led the investigation, described the case as “highly complex and multi-jurisdictional,” requiring careful review of thousands of documents. Qian had successfully evaded authorities for five years before her arrest, which triggered a seven-year-long investigation involving multiple international partners.
Qian’s accomplice, Jian Wen, a former takeaway worker, had previously been sentenced to six years and eight months for assisting in laundering the stolen cryptocurrency. Wen upgraded his lifestyle drastically, renting a multimillion-pound house in North London and purchasing two properties in Dubai. Despite claiming he acted on behalf of a Chinese employer, Wen could not provide credible evidence of the funds’ origins. Authorities eventually seized more than £300 million worth of cryptocurrency.
The case marks the world’s largest bitcoin seizure and highlights the challenges of tackling cross-border financial crimes in the age of cryptocurrency.
