Comcast Loses More Broadband Customers as Competition Intensifies

Comcast Loses More Broadband Customers as Competition Intensifies

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

US telecommunications and media company Comcast lost more broadband customers than analysts expected in the third quarter of 2026, highlighting the growing pressure on its core internet business as rivals compete aggressively on price. The company reported a decline of 144,000 broadband customers during the quarter, exceeding FactSet analysts’ estimate of 116,800 losses. The decline was also steeper than the 91,000 customers lost during the same period a year earlier. Price cuts by major carriers such as AT&T and smaller fibre internet providers are making it harder for Comcast to retain customers without offering more competitive deals. The figures underline the challenges facing traditional broadband providers as consumers gain more options for home internet services.

Price Competition Weighs on Customer Retention

Comcast is facing increasing pressure to protect its subscriber base as competitors use lower prices to attract customers. For internet providers, retaining existing users is important because broadband subscriptions represent a recurring source of revenue. Heavy discounting may help companies win customers, but it can also put pressure on profitability. Comcast must balance competitive pricing with the need to maintain revenue and margins in its connectivity business. The company is reportedly planning significant layoffs as part of a broader effort to restructure this business. The supplied report did not specify the number of potential job cuts or their timing.

NBCUniversal and Peacock Deliver Stronger Results

While broadband performance weakened, Comcast’s media operations recorded gains from theatrical releases and streaming activity. Its media division generated third-quarter revenue of $5.36 billion, an increase of 13 per cent, supported by World Cup programming and the popularity of Love Island USA on Peacock. Peacock, Comcast’s streaming service, reported quarterly pre-tax profit of $261 million, compared with a pre-tax loss of $217 million in the same period a year earlier. Universal Studios also benefited from the success of The Odyssey, which the report described as the studio’s highest-grossing film in its history. The performance helped lift the unit’s pre-tax profit by 18.6 per cent.

Theme Parks Face Demand Challenges

Not all of Comcast’s entertainment businesses reported growth. Its theme park division faced weaker demand in Orlando, while geopolitical tensions continued to discourage Chinese tourists from visiting Japan. The segment recorded a 4.4 per cent decline in revenue to $2.60 billion, below the average analyst estimate of $2.71 billion, according to LSEG data. These mixed results show the different pressures affecting Comcast’s businesses, with broadband facing subscriber losses while streaming and theatrical entertainment provide areas of strength.

Planned NBCUniversal Spinoff in 2027

Comcast plans to separate its media businesses, including studios, theme parks and Peacock, as part of a planned NBCUniversal spinoff by mid-2027. The proposed separation would mark a significant change in the company’s structure as it manages its connectivity operations alongside entertainment assets. The broadband business is facing stronger competition, while its media division is benefiting from selected content and streaming successes. Comcast reported adjusted earnings of $1.07 per share, beating analysts’ estimate of 98 cents. Its shares rose approximately 2 per cent in premarket trading following the results.
