Unlocking the Hidden Powers of Isabgol: Insights from a Nutritionist

Unlocking the Hidden Powers of Isabgol: Insights from a Nutritionist

Post by : Saif Rahman

Many households recognize isabgol, or psyllium husk, as a staple in their kitchens, typically used as a quick fix for constipation. However, experts now affirm that this simple source of fiber possesses a range of benefits often overlooked.

Nutritionist Kanchan Nayyar, a mentor in gut health, highlights isabgol as a form of soluble fiber that significantly aids digestion, contributes to weight management, and helps maintain blood sugar levels. Through a recent social media video, she elaborated on how its advantages shift depending on consumption time and method.

The primary use of isabgol remains its ability to alleviate constipation. When consumed with warm water or milk, it swells and softens stools, resulting in smoother, regular bowel movements. For optimal results, nutritionists recommend a tablespoon before bedtime.

Additionally, isabgol can effectively reduce acidity. When blended with cold milk, it creates a protective layer in the stomach that soothes irritation and calms discomfort associated with acid reflux, especially after indulging in heavy or spicy foods.

A less recognized advantage of isabgol includes its capacity to support weight management. When taken with lukewarm water prior to meals, it fosters a prolonged sense of fullness, minimizing the chances of overeating and impulsive snacking, thereby aiding in calorie control.

During bouts of diarrhea, isabgol can also prove beneficial. When combined with curd, it aids in restoring gut flora and absorbs excess fluids in the intestines, facilitating a quicker recovery from loose motions.

Individuals monitoring their blood sugar levels may also find isabgol advantageous. Taken with water post-meal, it can decelerate glucose absorption, preventing sudden spikes in sugar levels, and is particularly beneficial for those managing diabetes or insulin resistance.

Experts caution that, while isabgol is a natural option, it must be utilized judiciously. Adequate hydration is essential when consuming fiber, and those with existing health issues should consult a physician before integrating it into their routine.

In an era abundant with costly supplements and intricate diet plans, isabgol emerges as a straightforward, economical, and multifaceted option. When used appropriately, this unassuming fiber can contribute to overall health in numerous ways beyond simply alleviating constipation.
