When used maliciously, deepfakes become a tool for targeted harassment. These synthetic materials can be strikingly convincing, making it hard to separate fact from fabrication. While the same techniques have legitimate uses in film, training and communication, their misuse raises serious concerns for mental health professionals, regulators and social platforms.
Deepfakes are media creations produced by AI systems that alter or generate images, video or speech to appear authentic. Examples include placing a person’s face onto another body, cloning a voice to utter false remarks, or producing intimate imagery without consent.
Perpetrators use deepfakes to intimidate, humiliate or damage reputations. Common scenarios include:
Non-consensual sexualized imagery designed to shame victims.
Impersonation clips circulated to mislead audiences or defame someone.

In cultures where reputation carries significant social or professional weight, deepfake attacks can have especially severe fallout. Women, public figures and marginalized communities are often more vulnerable.
Improving public understanding of AI and manipulated media is crucial to preventing victim-blaming and building resilience against fabricated content.
Researchers are refining AI tools that spot subtle inconsistencies in lighting, motion and audio to detect deepfakes. Continued progress is needed to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated falsifications.
Some services are trialing alerts for suspected manipulated media, verification markers, digital watermarks and clearer labeling to help users distinguish authentic content.
Cooperation among tech firms, governments, academia and NGOs can produce shared resources like rapid-reporting systems, common databases and public education campaigns to curb deepfake harm.
