Many people stay tired throughout the day even after what should be a full night’s sleep. If this sounds familiar, the cause may go beyond stress or poor rest. Clinicians point out that inadequate iron in the body can lead to prolonged fatigue. Iron is vital for producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen; without enough iron, organs and muscles receive less oxygen, producing weakness, exhaustion and lightheadedness.
Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, says persistent weariness can be an early indicator of iron shortfall. He explains, “Iron is central to haemoglobin formation. When iron stores fall, the body cannot generate sufficient oxygen-carrying red cells, which often shows up as persistent tiredness, reduced strength and occasional dizziness.”
Certain groups face a higher risk of iron depletion. Women with heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnant people, those following vegetarian or vegan diets, and patients with specific medical conditions are more prone to developing iron deficiency. If overlooked, this can progress to iron deficiency anaemia, bringing further signs such as paler skin, cold hands and feet, breathlessness on exertion, or unusual cravings like chewing ice (pica).
The upside is that low iron is often correctable through diet. Dr Sood recommends adding iron-rich items — for example, leafy greens, red meat, lentils, beans and fortified cereals — into daily meals. Pairing these with vitamin C sources such as oranges, tomatoes or bell peppers enhances iron absorption.
When diet alone does not restore levels, a clinician may advise iron supplements, but these should only be taken under medical guidance. Dr Sood stresses the importance of a simple blood test to measure iron and related markers if tiredness persists; early diagnosis and treatment can restore energy and improve overall wellbeing.
Fatigue is widespread but should not be dismissed. Paying attention to symptoms, improving dietary iron intake, ensuring adequate rest and consulting a healthcare professional when needed can prevent long-term consequences and help you regain daily vitality.
