The eagerly awaited friendly match featuring Lionel Messi’s Argentina and India, initially set for November 17 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, has been delayed. This encounter will now take place during FIFA’s next international window. Organizers have assured that a new date will be revealed shortly.
The postponement is attributed to the hold-up in obtaining the necessary official approval from FIFA, the international governing body of football. Anto Augustine, managing director of the Reporter Broadcasting Company and event sponsor, communicated via social media that discussions with FIFA and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) resulted in the decision to shift the game.
The AFA pointed out multiple challenges associated with hosting the event in India this November. Reports suggest that the stadium and surrounding logistics fell short of FIFA standards, with repeated lapses in preparations. Although organizers sent a team to inspect the stadium and its amenities, the November timeline became unfeasible.
Confusion arose among fans due to prior statements from the Kerala Sports Minister and other officials, with some reports mistakenly suggesting the match was canceled. Eventually, the AFA clarified that Argentina would still play in Kochi, albeit with a new schedule, adding to the uncertainty.
Organizers are collaborating with FIFA and AFA to cement a new date for the match. The rescheduled event may occur during the next FIFA international window, likely in early 2026. Fans are encouraged to follow official channels for updates on tickets and scheduling.
Despite the delay, fans remain excited for Messi’s visit and the friendly match, with organizers aiming to ensure that the new date adheres to all FIFA protocols to provide a memorable experience for Indian football enthusiasts.
