Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia has momentarily departed from the team to address what officials are calling a “deeply personal family matter.” The announcement was made on Thursday, just a day before the World Series commenced. Vesia will miss at least the opening two games of the championship series while he attends to these pressing family obligations.
The Dodgers have publicly expressed their support for Vesia and his loved ones. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family,” they stated. An update will follow when it is suitable. Although the specifics remain undisclosed, reports from USA Today indicate that Vesia and his wife, Kayla, are expecting their first child.
At 29, Vesia has been a pivotal player in the Dodgers’ bullpen throughout the postseason, showcasing a 3.86 ERA across seven appearances—making him one of manager Dave Roberts' trusted relievers. His absence could significantly influence the team's pitching options during the initial games of this Fall Classic.
Manager Dave Roberts mentioned that the organization is considering adjustments to the roster due to Vesia’s absence. “We’re in the mode of trying to understand the process, the rules, and the best way to navigate the roster,” he explained during a press conference. He noted that they must finalize the World Series roster by Friday morning, adding that they are taking things “day by day” with “no expectations,” regarding Vesia’s potential return.
As the deadline to finalize the World Series roster approaches, the Dodgers may opt to place Vesia on the family medical emergency list. According to league regulations, this move necessitates that Vesia miss a minimum of three and a maximum of seven days. Should this occur, it might allow him to rejoin the team for Game 3, set to take place in Los Angeles.
If adjustments are made, the team could bring in Tanner Scott, another left-handed reliever, to cover Vesia’s position temporarily. Scott, who recently signed a four-year, $72 million contract, has not pitched this postseason but his improved health raises the chance of his involvement. Despite facing difficulties during the regular season, where he finished with a 4.74 ERA and lost his closer role to Roki Sasaki, he has resumed bullpen sessions and indicated he feels better.
During the 2024 regular season, Vesia recorded an impressive 3.02 ERA and secured five saves over 68 appearances. His consistent performance and ability to handle pressure have made him an essential relief pitcher for the Dodgers. His experience is particularly valuable in the high-stakes environment of the World Series.
For Vesia and the Dodgers, these moments are both emotional and fraught with uncertainty. As the team prioritizes winning the championship, they also remain committed to supporting Vesia during this significant personal occasion. Manager Roberts and the team have shown unwavering support, acknowledging the importance of family during such times.
The organization holds onto optimism that Vesia can return before the series wraps up, depending on the evolution of his family matters. If he makes it back by Game 3 or thereafter, his return would be a considerable boost to the Dodgers, given his pitching prowess.
Vesia's temporary departure from the Dodgers during the World Series epitomizes the delicate balance that professional athletes navigate between personal responsibilities and career aspirations. The Dodgers are firmly behind their player as he prioritizes an essential family milestone. Fans and teammates are united in hoping for good news from the Vesia family and his prompt return to the pitch.
