New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially withdrawn from his reelection campaign, but experts say his exit may come too late to significantly change the dynamics of the November mayoral race. Adams’ decision follows declining poll numbers and challenges in fundraising, and had long been speculated by political observers and donors.
Adams’ withdrawal could potentially benefit former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who some polls suggest would perform better against front-runner Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in a direct contest. However, political analysts warn that even with Adams out, Cuomo still faces an uphill battle. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, consistently leads in the polls, often by double digits, while Adams had been polling fourth among the four major candidates, which also includes Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Despite Adams dropping out, his name will still appear on the ballot because he missed the September 11 deadline to remove it. Strategists caution that this late exit is unlikely to dramatically shift voter support or the election outcome.

Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder, has refused to leave the race, dismissing pressures to withdraw. Some supporters had hoped for a consolidation of anti-Mamdani votes behind Cuomo, but Sliwa has insisted he will remain in contention.
While Adams’ departure may influence fundraising, with some donors expressing interest in supporting Cuomo’s campaign through PACs, political analysts note that it could also backfire. Discussions of Cuomo seeking Trump’s support to challenge Mamdani have fueled narratives that may not sit well with all voters.
Experts emphasize that Cuomo’s path to victory remains difficult due to his high negative ratings and Mamdani’s strong polling numbers. Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf noted that simply having Adams exit the race does not guarantee a clear path for Cuomo, and voters still need to be convinced why they should choose Cuomo over Mamdani.
The race remains highly competitive, and despite Adams’ withdrawal, Mamdani maintains a strong lead and is likely to remain the candidate to beat in the upcoming election.
