Nepal has imposed travel restrictions on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four other senior officials amid an investigation into deadly protests that shook the country earlier this month. The unrest began on September 8, initially triggered by a brief social media ban, economic challenges, and allegations of corruption. It quickly escalated into nationwide protests, resulting in widespread violence.
Over two days, clashes left at least 73 people dead. Protesters set fire to the parliament and several government offices, contributing to the collapse of the sitting government. The unrest caused significant disruption across Nepal, with the private sector, including hotels, retail, and the automobile industry, suffering losses estimated at around $600 million.
Travel bans have also been placed on former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, ex-head of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and two other senior bureaucrats. These restrictions, already in effect, require the officials to obtain permission even to leave the Kathmandu Valley, as authorities may summon them for questioning at any time.
Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who is overseeing the country until elections in March 2026, established a commission to investigate the violence. Commission member Bigyan Raj Sharma emphasized that the officials could be called for investigation at any moment.
Former Prime Minister Oli has blamed “infiltrators” for instigating the bloodshed and alleged that weapons used in the protests came from external sources. The situation highlights ongoing political instability and the challenges Nepal faces in restoring order and governance.
