Heart disease represents a significant health threat in India, with the World Heart Federation reporting over 2.8 million deaths from cardiovascular diseases in 2021. Heart attacks rank among the leading causes of mortality. The surge in heart-related issues is attributed to stress, poor dietary choices, lack of physical exercise, and shifting lifestyles impacting individuals across different age groups.
Dr. Brijmohan Arora, a veteran diabetologist with over 24 years of experience in managing diabetes and heart conditions, advocates for a simple yet effective practice that can bolster heart health. He asserts that a mere 10 to 15-minute walk after meals can lower heart attack risk by nearly 40%. If walking were a prescribed medication, he would urge every patient to adopt it. This brief activity proves particularly beneficial for those grappling with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or a predisposition to heart disease.
Dr. Arora elaborates that after eating, blood sugar levels increase naturally. A rapid spike prompts the body to release more insulin, which can lead to inflammation within the arteries. Over time, such inflammation is a precursor to heart attacks and strokes. Engaging in a gentle post-meal walk facilitates balanced sugar utilization, averting quick blood sugar elevations and minimizing inflammation.
This practice also aids in lowering triglyceride levels—fats found in the bloodstream. Elevated triglycerides over time can contribute to plaque formation in arteries, hindering blood circulation. By walking after a meal, the body metabolizes triglycerides more effectively, promoting cleaner and healthier blood.
Moreover, walking post-meal enhances digestion. Many individuals experience discomfort, bloating, or acidity after meals. A leisurely stroll aids the stomach in processing food more efficiently, alleviating feelings of heaviness.
Dr. Arora accentuates that achieving good health isn't solely about major changes but rather small, consistent habits. Walking after meals requires no gym, equipment, or extra expenses; it can be accomplished at home, in hallways, on terraces, or outdoors. Even a gentle walk yields significant advantages if practiced regularly.
For those finding it hard to walk after every meal, he recommends starting with lunch and dinner before eventually incorporating breakfast. The key lies in establishing a sustainable routine that fits seamlessly into everyday life.
In today's world, prolonged sedentary behavior is rampant, with even young adults experiencing heart issues at increasingly younger ages. Though a simple act, the habit of walking after meals harbors immense long-term benefits, from protecting heart health to managing sugar levels and supporting overall wellness.
