German Court Orders Afghan Into Psychiatric Care After Toddler’s Killing

German Court Orders Afghan Into Psychiatric Care After Toddler’s Killing

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A court in Germany has ordered the placement of an Afghan national into psychiatric care following a fatal knife attack that claimed the lives of a 2‑year‑old child and a man in Aschaffenburg. The perpetrator, identified as Enamullah O. under German privacy laws, was found to be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was deemed not criminally responsible.

The incident occurred in January 2025 when the 28‑year‑old attacker targeted a kindergarten group, killing the toddler and another adult. Because of his mental condition, the case did not proceed as a standard criminal trial but through a special legal procedure aimed at individuals who cannot be held criminally liable. The court spokesperson confirmed the decision to send Enamullah into psychiatric care.

The brutal attack occurred just a month before Germany’s February federal election and triggered national outrage. It played a significant role in heightening public concern over migration, asylum policy and security, contributing to the political momentum of the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Political impact aside, the ruling now opens the path for Enamullah’s care and treatment rather than conventional incarceration, reflecting Germany’s legal framework for mentally ill offenders. Observers note the case highlights the tough balancing act between residents’ safety, immigration policy and the rights of the severely mentally ill.

As Germany continues to debate migration and asylum, this incident underscores how individual acts can ripple into broader political and legal waves
