The Progressive Conservative government of Ontario has created a new record by spending an astonishing $111.9 million on public advertisements ahead of the snap election in February, marking the highest budget for such expenses in the province's history. This amount exceeds last year's record by $8.4 million.
In her latest report, Auditor General Shelley Spence highlighted that this surge in spending aligns with the election period and predominantly serves campaigns that appear to “promote the ruling party” rather than convey essential information regarding public services.
Critics from the opposition have accused the government of misusing taxpayer dollars for political advantages. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles remarked, “Doug Ford is attempting to mislead the citizens of our province with funds that belong to them. Ontarians are dealing with real struggles over jobs, housing, and food, and they deserve a government focused on solutions, not propaganda.”
The report pointed out significant ad campaigns, including those aimed at U.S. officials to avert potential trade tariffs, with a budget of $52 million and an actual spend of $40.1 million, mainly on television. Additionally, the domestic “It’s Happening Here” campaign was flagged by the Auditor General previously for lacking an objective public message while boosting the governing party’s image. Spence’s 2025 report reiterated that this campaign “did not provide details about services or programs, instead seemingly intended to polish Ontarians’ view of their government’s condition.”
This report has raised alarm over the increasing trend of utilizing public funds for enhancing government image, especially during election time. Analysts suggest such expenditures may blur the distinction between governmental communication and party promotion, prompting demands for rigorous oversight regarding taxpayer-funded advertising.
The findings of the Auditor General have sparked renewed discussions about transparency, fiscal health, and the ethical application of public resources in Ontario.
